The recent Budget brought good news for churches and charities with the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme, church repairs, military charities and air ambulances all receiving valuable new support.
From 06 April 2016, charities will be able to claim up to £2,000 as a top-up payment under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme.
This translates as up to £8,000 donation value, a rise of £3,000 from the present £5,000 limit and yielding an extra £350 per charity.
A further £40 million has been pledged for repairs to church and cathedral roofs following the heavily over-subscribed £15 million fund launched in last autumn’s budget.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, tweeted: “Trebling of money for church repairs will create local skilled jobs, improve community facilities and protect heritage, most welcome.”
Applications for the new money will be invited later this year. The scheme is being run by the Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund.
Military and emergency charities are major beneficiaries of a new £75 million five-year plan funded by fines levied on banks for manipulating LIBOR.
The money will be spread across healthcare charities for veterans (£25m), military charities supporting those who fought in Afghanistan (£10m), five regional air ambulance charities (£10m) and the Royal British Legion (£3m).
Useful VAT reliefs have also been extended to blood bike charities following a new measure to allow similar reliefs to hospices and air ambulances announced in the autumn statement. A new grant was also announced to support rapid response vehicles for medical purposes.
