A surprise announcement was made in late October 2015 changing Gift Aid declaration wording. The previous wording of 2012 had not made Gift Aid clear ‘without doubt’ after all, and a new simplified version was required.
HMRC imposed another harsh deadline of 05 April 2016 for moving to the new wording, barely five months from announcing the change.Read More

HMRC is ending its concession allowing envelopes bearing old style Gift Aid declarations to be used up.
Churches and charities that have not replaced their Gift Aid envelopes since 2011 may now be using invalid declarations.
New wording requirements were introduced in early 2012 emphasising the need to ensure donors understood they needed to pay enough tax to cover all donations in the year. The new rules also clarified which taxes qualified for Gift Aid.Read More

Northern Ireland’s long awaited charities registration system was launched on 16 December by the new charities regulator for the province, the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland.
Registration is compulsory for all organisations that are, or could be, charitable. There are estimated to be between 7,000 and 12,000 of these in Northern Ireland, many of who are customers of Envelope Systems.Read More

Some may be sad to see this initiative withdrawn. It was a good idea but take up was poor. This is maybe a good example of use it or lose it.
Since 2005, self assessment taxpayers have been able to direct that a repayment of tax due should go to a charity of their choice instead.
HMRC have said the scheme was little used, not cost-effective and vulnerable to fraud without extensive upgrading.Read More

Leave at least ten per cent of your net estate to charity and the tax charged to your estate will go down from April 2012.
This initiative only applies after exemptions, reliefs and the nil rate band have been taken into account.
If the ten per cent rule is fulfilled, tax on the residue of your estate will only be charged at 36 per cent and not the standard inheritance tax rate of 40%.Read More
